When it is appropriate, we like to combine the four methods into an integrated learning process. We have the students explore some of the topic via an experiential activity before any formal learning (either by themselves or by an instructor). We then use think-pair-share in the classroom to dive into what the students 'discovered'. We then use a constructive failure exercise to understand what the students really understood or not, and usually there is a bit of struggling and face-planting. We follow up with the debriefing, a 'successful' process or exercise, and then set up an opportunity for the students to try their hand again. Depending on the topic, key methods and concepts are introduced along the way, hooking onto the 'memories' and 'imagery'; leveraging the multiple contact points with the desired learning outcome.
